OZONE
After you have cleaned your air ducts and installed an electrostatic filter, the next thing to consider is installing an ozone generator. Ozone is one of the purest and most powerful oxidants and germicides known, and when it comes to destroying odors; neutralizing harmful organic chemical compounds, and nullifying microbiological substances, nothing works better.

Ozone is a gas comprised of 3 atoms of oxygen compared to the standard oxygen molecule, which has 2. Though created electrically in nature during active thunder- storms, ozone can also be produced by passing dry air between two parallel or concentric electrodes separated by a dielectric. The oxygen in the air is broken down to charged oxygen atoms, some of which recombine to form molecules of ozone. You are probably familiar with the positive, sweet smell after a storm, what we associate as clean, fresh air and that smell of laundry hung outside in the sun to dry. That smell is ozone.

Because ozone is very unstable and decomposes readily to ordinary oxygen, it reacts rapidly with most materials. That's why it is so great at nullifying odors. I first encountered this in doing fire restoration, while trying to rid homes of the penetrating odor of smoke. In many cases, after just a few hours of use, the smoke odor was eliminated. This was accomplished without adding even more pollutants into the air, such as deodorizers or fragrances to mask the odor.
In addition, spores, pollen, viruses, fungi, tobacco smoke, organic residue from insects, rodents, roaches and pests are also nullified by ozone. It also reacts with and breaks down into harmless compounds: organic acids, alcohol, aldehydes, keytones, benzene, camphor, butane, mineral spirits, chlorides, nitrogen compounds, sulphur compounds and many other chemicals found in the carpeting, paint, and building materials in your home.

How many illnesses can be traced to the presence of these organisms and compounds in our homes? It isn't surprising that the lack of ozone in our homes and businesses is a primary factor in unhealthy indoor environments. As we live and work in airtight buildings, outside air, with naturally occurring ozone in it, is rarely, if ever, brought inside and interchanged. Consequently, because it is lacking, the above compounds have nothing to break them down and render them inert and harmless. Small ozone generators can be installed in homes and offices, and as long as ozone is continually introduced at safe levels, pollution levels from organic and inorganic compounds will remain low, greatly contributing to healthier air and a healthier life-style.

In a recent study, researchers found that after five months of testing with both a test group and a control group, a feeling of well being returned to those exposed to ozone, with an increase in immune potential, higher oxygen content in the blood, improved blood pressure reading, and a reduction of many of the stress characteristics associated with working in modern office environments. Other testimonies include allergic reactions reduced, sleeping improved, non-specific headaches reduced, depression reduced and symptoms of sinus problems relieved. So, aside from destroying many of the harmful elements in the air we breathe, it apparently improves our state of mind!
