IONIZATION
Ions are molecules that carry a charge of electricity , either positive or negative. Therefore, ionization is the process of charging something either positively or negatively. Like ozone, ions are generated naturally by sunlight, lightning, waterfalls, etc., and are typically found at levels of 3,000 positive and 4,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter. Also like ozone, because indoor air is rarely interchanged with outside air and because most grounded objects carry a positive charge, negative ions are rapidly depleted. By adding negative ions to an environment, the airborne particles will take on this electronic charge and be attracted to oppositely charged particles which will become heavy enough to be settled to the ground by gravity or, the charged particle will be attracted to the already positively charged grounded objects, such as walls, floors and doors. Either way, the particles are now out of your breathing space.

There are two methods used to generate ions.
One is radio frequency (RF) and the other is direct current (DC).

RF generators deliver 3,000 positive and 4,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter anywhere within the radius of 60 feet of the unit. Ions will be generated through walls, ceilings, and floors, as long as the frequency does not have to pass through metal objects. RF generators are used in environments with relatively low levels of airborne particulate.

DC generators produce ions at the unit itself and are dependent on air movement, unlike the RF generators which produce waves that go out in all directions. With these machines, many more ions are being generated, but they must come in contact with the particulate to be effective. Consequently, these are extremely effective in highly polluted environments, provided there is sufficient air movement to disperse them and propel them into airborne particulate.

What does this mean to you? On the most elementary level, it can mean greatly reduced dust in your home. It also works to neutralize odors such as cigarette and cigar smoke and exhaust fumes.
