AIR PURIFIERS Another proven method of cleaning the air is with air purifiers. As you may know, these have been on the market for some time, and without a doubt, they provide a very good service. There are a number of companies that manufacture them, and any heating and air conditioning firm should be able to help you acquire one. They can also be purchased at many hardware and discount stores, as well. For those who don't know what they are, I'll briefly explain. Air purifiers are basically a box which has a fan in it that draws air into it through a filter of some variety and exhausts the filtered air back into the room. Basically, the quality of filter it uses determines the effectiveness of the unit. Earlier units had conventional filtration medium combined with charcoal to remove odors. More recent units have HEPA* filters to remove extremely small contaminants and pollutants, as well as separate charcoal filters to remove odors. Some even have ionizers, as well. |

The downside is that the filters are fairly expensive, ranging from $30 to $150, and they have to be changed several times a year if the unit is to perform optimally. Also, the energy costs to operate them are extremely high. These units have a fairly big fan which must operate continuously and it will really show on your electric bill. The other downside is that they are designed to operate in fairly small areas - usually in rooms no larger than 175 SF. Consequently, the average home will need several, which compounds the operating costs significantly. For these reasons, I again recommend the ozone/ion generator. They are extremely inexpensive to operate and maintain. There are no filters to replace, and one unit can service up to 2,500 SF. They not only clean the air, but they destroy harmful organisms and nullify harmful compounds. Though air purifiers work well, I think you will find that these ozone/ion generators will out-perform them hands down. |

| *HEPA is an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Air, and relates to a HEPA filter's ability to absorb and trap the pollutant-laden particles it comes into contact with. A HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles in the air, trapping particles as tiny as 0.3 microns in size. For every 10,000 particles that enter the filter, only 3 pass through. |
